IMD forecasts extremely heavy rain in north Bengal, warns of landslides

Kolkata: The IMD on Friday predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rains in the sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal over the weekend and warned of possible landslides in hill areas and inundation in low-lying areas in the northern plains.

Even as the low pressure area over the Ganges West Bengal is gradually weakening, the conditions are expected to trigger heavy rains in north Bengal, the weather office said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain and heavy showers at one or two places are expected in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts on July 18 and 19. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

It was stated that heavy and very heavy rains are expected in all sub-regions of the Himalaya on July 20, after which the rainfall intensity is expected to decrease.

The IMD has warned of possible landslides in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong and inundation of low-lying areas in the plains of north Bengal.


The southern parts of the state, including Kolkata, will receive light to moderate rains until July 22, the Met office said.
According to IMD data, Toorsa tea garden in Alipurduar recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 5 cm in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday.

Other places that received significant rainfall include Saraswatipur tea garden in Jalpaiguri (4 cm), Rongo in Kalimpong (3 cm), Baintgoorie tea garden in Jalpaiguri (3 cm) and Beech tea garden in Alipurduar (3 cm).
