Nasa said astronauts aboard the International Space Station were ordered to hide in their spacecraft and prepare for possible evacuation while the Russian crew tried to fix a worsening air leak in its section of the orbital laboratory.

The four astronauts on NASA’s Crew-12 mission – two US astronauts, a French astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut – received orders from NASA mission control at 9.04am ET (2pm BST) on Friday to enter the Crew Dragon spacecraft docked with the station and don spacesuits in case an air leak required an emergency evacuation, a NASA official said.
