What’s next for Australia’s newest Olympic gold medallists Josie Baff and Cooper Woods?
Do they need to hire an agent? When do they start their public speaking tour? Are there meetings with Vegemite and Weet-Bix marketing types in your diaries anymore?
“It’s actually funny you should say that because I ate six Weet-Bixs this morning,” Baff said.

“And I think I ate three or four alone. [snowboard cross] day. I came to Lambo [teammate Adam Lambert] and he said, ‘I feel much better today.’ ‘I was able to eat a full size breakfast.’
“So yeah, I’d love to be a Weet-Bix kid. If you’d like to put that in your articles, I’d really appreciate it. [also] “I love the car.”
Baff was joking, of course. Sort of. Mostly about the car.
The truth is, when you enter the names of most Australian Winter Olympians into a search engine, you’ll often see fundraising pages at the top of the results seeking help with travel costs, competition costs and equipment. Their lives are expensive and institutional support is hard to come by, so hay needs to be made as much as possible when the sun shines.
This may be why Woods, the new Olympic men’s champion, returned to Australia when the show was over.
“This is all new to me,” he said.
“I’ve got a really good squad, they’ll take good care of me and decide what’s best. I think now I’ll go back to Australia after the Games; just think about what the next steps will be because it’s a great opportunity.”

Their DMs must be closing. The coolest letter Woods said was from Dylan Alcott.
“I think he’s just a legend,” he said.
“He reached over and said: ‘If you get double the gold, we’ll have a few beers.’ Either way, we’ll still enjoy it. I’m pretty excited about this, but I’ve had some pretty amazing people reach out to me…it’s hard to keep up with everything that’s coming.
“And let me tell you, it was really incredible to meet Jess Fox. She’s an Aussie icon and a legend, and I spent a lot of time with her yesterday, getting to know her, and I’d love to hear a little bit about this whole journey and how it’s going to be handled. She’s so much fun.”

Baff also considered returning home, but he has goals to achieve on the World Cup tour first; such as the Crystal Globe, awarded by the international ski and snowboard federation FIS to the overall discipline winner of the season.
“I will talk to my manager about this,” he said.
Baff doesn’t have to go too far for advice. Her partner, Canadian Eliot Grondin, is now a three-time silver medalist and has been down this path before.
“I’m truly happy and grateful. I’m excited for the journey and prepared for what’s to come,” he said. “I talked to my boyfriend about this… I know things will change, but I’m sure I won’t.”
