Mexico City Grand Prix: Lando Norris storms to win in McLaren

McLaren driver Lando Norris took the championship lead for the first time since April with a commanding victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
While Norris maintained the lead from pole position into the first corner and controlled the race from there, he was out of reach with some tough challenges and events behind him.
Norris leads the championship just one point behind teammate Oscar Piastri, who battled from seventh on the grid to finish fifth.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who is in third place just behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, is 36 points behind the leadership with four races left.
A virtual safety car in the final two laps deprived the race of a grandstand finish; Piastri, who was chasing Verstappen and Oliver Bearman’s Haas right behind Leclerc, prevented overtaking as they both got into position to tackle.
However, Bearman’s fourth place was reward for an outstanding drive by British rookie Bearman.
The main stories of a dramatic race were:
-
Norris was one behind Piastri’s win total as he cruised to his sixth win of the season
-
Great recovery from Verstappen after losing ground following some questionable early manoeuvres.
-
Damage limitation from Piastri after tough qualifying
-
Bearman’s outstanding driving benefits from Verstappen’s early race aggression
