Jan Suraksha enrolments near 940 million as govt weighs benefits

New Delhi: The government’s flagship Jan Suraksha schemes, which offer retirement benefits along with life and accident insurance, have registered around 940 million subscribers in total.

Cumulative enrollments under the schemes launched in May 2015 are over 274.3 million under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), 580.9 million under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and nearly 90.4 million under Atal Pension Yojana (APY), the finance ministry said in a statement.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said compensation claims worth Rs 21,500 crore under PMJJBY have been resolved for more than 1.07 million families. Under PMSBY, claims worth ₹3,660 crore have been settled for over 184,000 families.

In a statement from the finance ministry, Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary said that digitization of the claims process ensures faster resolution and timely support to bereaved families.

The programs are specifically designed to provide affordable financial protection to underserved and vulnerable segments of society, the ministry said.

“These pioneering plans aim to broaden the insurance and retirement landscape by protecting citizens against life’s uncertainties and promoting long-term financial resilience,” he said.
Earlier this week, financial services minister M Nagaraju said the government may revise some benefits under Jan Suraksha schemes if the ongoing negotiations proceed as planned.

“We are doing a lot of scenario analysis; what is the affordability, what is the cost and also what is the underwriting cost. Once it is approved, we will know,” he said.
