Jill Biden book outlines husband’s re-election decision

Jill Biden is breaking her silence about her decision to abruptly end her 2024 presidential reelection bid under pressure from Democrats concerned about her age, health and viability against Republican Donald Trump in a rematch of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.
Jill Biden, a political wife for nearly 50 years, said she never publicly discussed her feelings about the three-week period in which her husband ended his political career, instead saving her thoughts for the pages of his soon-to-be-released memoir.
Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, announced Wednesday that View from the East Wing: A Memoir is scheduled for release on June 2.
Jill Biden told The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview that the book was “a reflection of my four years as First Lady” and that writing it was therapeutic in a way.
“It was kind of cathartic for me to write that, and I wrote about all the sometimes painful but sometimes really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency,” she said.
Jill Biden declined Tuesday to discuss any of those moments, good or bad, including watching her husband move toward a decision to end his 50-year political career by withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race.
When then-President Joe Biden announced in April 2023 that he would run for a second term, he was 80 years old and the oldest president in US history.
His age and his readiness to serve four more years (which would take him to 86) became a source of public concern.
After a disastrous debate performance against Trump in June 2024, in which he struggled to make argument points in a high-pitched voice and often appeared to lose his train of thought, some of his fellow Democrats began pressuring him to step aside.
Aides attributed the poor performance to a cold.
Joe Biden at first insisted on staying in the race, but after a few weeks he withdrew from the campaign to support his vice president, Democrat Kamala Harris.
Harris became the party’s presidential nominee but lost to Trump in the November 2024 election.
Jill Biden said her book “I Put Things in Perspective” offers what she describes as a “more balanced view” of her husband’s presidency.
The memoir is also a tribute of sorts to women who, like her, juggle multiple roles.
“This is also a story about how I can balance life as a working woman, a mother, a grandmother and a First Lady,” she said.
74-year-old Jill Biden made history as the first First Lady to continue her career before entering the White House during her four-year term.
She had been teaching English and writing at the community college level for decades and continued to teach twice a week at a school in Northern Virginia while serving as First Lady.
