Hawaiian anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig was convicted of attempted murder based on extreme mental or emotional distress after prosecutors said he tried to kill his wife in a brutal, bloody cliffside attack fueled by suspicion of an affair.

After more than eight hours of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter, citing extreme mental or emotional distress. Sentencing is scheduled for August 13.

Jurors in the case were shown graphic police body camera video of Konig’s bloodied wife, who prosecutors said repeatedly hit her in the head as they weighed explosive testimony about the events that unfolded on a remote Oahu hiking trail on March 24, 2025.

Prosecutors argued the attack was motivated by jealousy and betrayal, pointing to what they described as a growing obsession with his wife’s alleged infidelity in the months before the incident.

A forensic investigator testified that investigators recovered posts in Reddit searches and on Konig’s laptop that focused on cheating, anger and divorce, including the headlines “Lying again,” “It’s over” and “I did something terrible.”

Authorities said Konig also purchased a voice-activated recorder and researched remote hiking locations, including the Pali Puka Trail, with keyword searches for “kill,” “death,” “cliff” and “fall,” as well as a Dropbox folder labeled “Divorce.”

Those tensions escalated further on March 24, 2025, when the couple traveled from Maui to Oahu for what was supposed to be a birthday trip, according to prosecutors.

Arielle Konig stated that the walk turned violent when her husband grabbed her and tried to force her towards the edge of the cliff.

He told jurors he threw himself to the ground and held on to vegetation as he tried to push himself off, then saw her holding a syringe and telling him to “stay still” before dropping him.

After a few minutes, he said, the man picked up a rock and started hitting him in the head.

“I started screaming… he’s trying to kill me,” she testified.

Hearing her screams, two hikers ran and called 911.

Jurors then watched body camera video of the aftermath of the incident; Arielle was covered in blood, confused, and trying to stay conscious as bystanders tried to help her.

Prosecutors bolstered that testimony when Gerhardt’s son, Emile Konig, told jurors that his father called him shortly after the attack and confessed to trying to kill his wife, blaming the alleged affair.

Emile stated that he “couldn’t go back to Maui and tried to kill her.”

She said her father later appeared on FaceTime with blood on his shirt and told her he planned to jump off the cliff before police arrived.

Prosecutors said he ended the conversation by saying, “I’ll leave before the police catch me.”

But Konig took the stand and denied trying to kill his wife, telling jurors that the confrontation got out of control after an argument about the alleged affair.

In his statement, he stated that he discovered secret messages between his wife and another man, which he described as devastating and described it as the turning point in their marriage.

He claimed that his wife pushed him, caught him and hit him with a stone on the road, and that he only hit her twice in self-defense.

Police said Konig fled the scene after marchers intervened and launched a manhunt before he was spotted with what appeared to be blood on his shirt and was taken into custody after a struggle.

Investigators also found a bloody rock, clothing and bags allegedly containing medical supplies allegedly tied to the defendant.

The defense argued that the incident was an “unplanned, unexpected fight” and pointed to marital tension and expert testimony that the injuries were not life-threatening.

Arielle Konig rejected this characterization.

“I would call it assault versus fighting,” he told jurors.
