Spain train crash leaves 21 people dead, 100 hurt in Córdoba province: report

At least 21 people died and dozens were injured when a high-speed train derailed and crashed into another train in southern Spain on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred around 18:40 local time near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba province, and a second train derailed due to the first derailment. According to Reuters, based on police sources and local media, approximately 100 people were injured, 25 of them seriously.

One of the train drivers was among the dead, according to Reuters.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator Adif said the Iryo 6189 Malaga-Madrid train derailed and hit an adjacent track, causing a second train from Madrid to Huelva to also derail.

The accident occurred about 10 minutes after the Iryo train left Córdoba.

According to Reuters, the Iryo train was determined to be a Freccia 1000 train carrying more than 300 passengers, while the other train was operated by Renfe and had approximately 100 people on it.

A woman who said she was a passenger on the Iryo train described the chaotic scenes during the derailment.

“Ten minutes after takeoff, the train started shaking too much and derailed from car number 6 behind us. The lights went out,” he wrote to X.

Videos posted on social media show emergency responders helping people climbing out of the train’s windows.

Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were subsequently suspended, according to Reuters.

The fatal derailment occurred just days after a separate rail disaster in Thailand killed at least 22 people when a construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train, causing it to derail and catch fire.
