Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar Announces Property Ownership Drive in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced a major property ownership drive aimed at correcting and streamlining property records here, saying the government has already corrected 23 lakh Khatas and allowed citizens to download their documents online. Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said the state government has started converting B-Khatas to A-Khatas and will organize special Khata camps within the corporation limits every Saturday from May 16 to help citizens secure property documents.

Khata is a legal document that certifies that a property in Bengaluru complies with all local laws and regulations and pays property tax to the civic body.

“We have already fixed 23 lakh khatas and provided people with the opportunity to download them,” he said.

Shivakumar revealed that a massive campaign is being run in Bengaluru to make property documents easier.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that five to 10 centers will be set up in each corporate district as part of the “Khata Andolana” program and appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers.

“I appeal to people to protect their property documents. We have created an opportunity for all citizens,” he said.

Calling it a “people-centric” initiative, Shivakumar said the government is working to ensure that citizens receive proper ownership documents for their properties.

Shivakumar also claimed that the initiative had attracted national attention and said the Union government had recognized Karnataka with an award for the programme.

“Your Khata is your right. Get your Khata and protect yourself from fraud,” he said and urged people to take advantage of the scheme.
