Kostyuk of Ukraine Beats Russia’s Andreeva to Win Madrid Open Title

MADRID: Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk became the champion at the Madrid Open by defeating Russian Mirra Andreeva with sets of 7-5, 6-3.

The two players, whose countries have been at war since Russia’s invasion in 2022, did not shake hands at the net after the match and did not pose together at the award ceremony.

The 23rd-seeded Kostyuk collapsed on the clay court and covered her face with her hands after converting the match point when Andreeva’s final shot flew wide. After standing up, he performed an acrobatic backflip to the cheers of the crowd. Meanwhile, Andreeva collapsed on her courtside seat and wrapped herself in a towel and cried.

Kostyuk concluded his victory speech by saying “Thank God, glory to Ukraine.”

The win was Kostyuk’s third WTA title, but her second in as many tournaments after her victory in Rouen last weekend.

Eighth-seeded Andreeva, who turns 19 on Wednesday, congratulated Koystuk as she spoke to the audience after receiving the second-place prize.

“I want to congratulate Marta and her team for today’s win and the season,” said Andreeva, as Kostyuk applauded. “You won two tournaments in a row, so congratulations.”

Kostyuk took first place at the WTA 1000 tournament for the first time, defeating fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula and 13th-seeded Linda Noskova en route to the final.

Against Andreeva, who was playing in her third WTA 1000 final, Kostyuk converted all four break chances and saved four of six break chances for her opponent.

“It’s an incredible feeling to endure it right now,” Kostyuk said. “Until last year I was 2-7 in Madrid and I never thought I would lift the title here. It was definitely not my favorite tournament but thanks to the crowd that supported me.”

On Sunday, top-seeded Jannik Sinner will face No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev in the men’s final.
