Nebraska players ask fans to stop storming court after Michigan State win

The Nebraska men’s basketball team made an unusual request to Cornhuskers fans during the program’s historic run: Please stay in your seats.
Nebraska continued its perfect run, extending its program-best start to 14-0 by beating No. 9 Michigan State 58-56 at home on Friday night, and when the final buzzer sounded, fans stormed the field to celebrate.

The win was the team’s 18th consecutive win since last season and the longest active streak in the country.

While the players were grateful for the support, they also appealed to the fans not to storm the pitch.
“If you’re a No. 13 against a No. 9 and it’s at home, I think you should win this game,” Nebraska forward Rienk Mast said. “I don’t blame the fans. They were excited about this win. From now on we have proven that we belong in these matches and we need to win such matches.
“We need to prove in every game that this is not a coincidence, that we are on a good streak and that we can lose,” he said. “We have to stay balanced and continue to prove people wrong.”

Guard Jamarques Lawrence echoed that sentiment.
“We need to win this match, guys,” he said. “No more court storms, please. I need to say this.”
Interestingly, Spartans head coach Tom Izzo had no problem with the celebration.

“I absolutely loved it, absolutely loved it,” he said after the game. “That doesn’t happen a lot at our place. It shouldn’t happen. But it needs to happen here. It’s a new experience. That’s the beauty of what you do when you build a program.”
“They were lining up there. I was thinking to myself, ‘Go ahead.’ I thought it was great.”
