Liverpool End Losing Streak With 5-1 Win at Eintracht Frankfurt

In Frankfurt: Liverpool beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, breaking a four-game losing streak with Hugo Ekiike scoring for the English champions against his former club.

After Ekitike equalized for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai grabbed the goals, the last two assisted by Florian Wirtz on his return to Germany.

Liverpool went into Wednesday’s match on their worst losing streak in 73 years, dating back to 1953-54 when they fell out of the top flight.

Arne Slot benched the in-form Mohamed Salah and Liverpool conceded first place for a fifth consecutive match after Rasmus Kristensen scored a counter goal.

The red-whites scored 3 goals in 10 minutes and took the lead 3-1 at halftime.

Wirtz, who has not scored or assisted in the Premier League or Champions League since his big-money transfer to Anfield, scored goals to Gakpo and Szoboszlai in the second half that would change the course of the game.

While Wirtz overturned his goal contribution, Alexander Isak again failed to fire and was sent off at half-time, replacing Federico Chiesa.

The win will boost Liverpool’s confidence but Arne Slot’s side will face bigger tests from Frankfurt, who have conceded 23 goals in their last six games.

With 26 minutes remaining, Nathaniel Brown picked up Wirtz’s pocket before Frankfurt burst onto the field, Mario Goetze finding Kristensen, who switched to his preferred right foot and took the opening kick.

Frankfurt put the pressure on for a second in the 35th minute when Andy Robertson won the ball and played an excellent long-range pass from deep to Ekiike.

The former Frankfurt striker received the pass, advanced towards goal and slid it under Michael Zetterer, before raising his palms to apologize to the home fans.

The goal went against the flow of play but shook Liverpool up.

The Reds went two ahead just four minutes later when Van Dijk headed Cody Gakpo’s corner past helpless winger Ansgar Knauff.

A minute before the break, Van Dijk’s centre-back partner Konate repeated the trick, again heading past Knauff for a corner.

Wirtz’s first half was mixed but he looked more confident once Liverpool took the lead. The German midfielder scored for Gakpo and Szoboszlai four minutes into the second half to put Liverpool on the path to a big win.
