Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers report issues as AWS goes down | UK | News

Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland all appear to have been affected by an outage; Many of their customers are reporting problems accessing their online services. This comes amid a major outage affecting the world’s biggest apps and sites, including Snapchat, Roblox and Duolingo. The issue appears to be linked to issues with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Downdetecter, a website that tracks complaints about online services, showed a huge increase in reports on Monday morning from websites including HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and a number of banking firms. “My payment was refused even though there was money in my account,” said a Lloyds customer. “Can’t access online banking, can’t pay online, can’t use card,” added a Halifax customer. “Halifax can’t be reached. What’s going on?”

Halifax, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland are all owned by the same parent company.

AWS, the world’s largest cloud computing provider, confirmed this morning that it was experiencing “high error rates and delays” across multiple services.

A service update shared shortly before 9:30 a.m. read: “We can confirm significant error rates for requests to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region.

“This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. During this time, customers may not be able to create or update Support Cases.

“Engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working to both mitigate the issue and fully understand the root cause.”

The problem was first reported around 8 a.m., and engineers identified the “potential root cause” about two hours later.

“Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to the DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint on US-East-1,” an AWS spokesperson said.

It is unclear how long the outage will last.
