Lord John Horam death: Former minister dies after falling on walk home from work, family says
Former minister Lord John Horam has died aged 87, his family said.
The colleague died at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, on July 2 after falling on his way home from a day working in the House of Lords.
His family said that he did not regain consciousness despite the intervention of paramedics and hospital staff.
Lord Horam was born in Preston, Lancashire, and was head boy of the independent Silcoates School.
He went on to study economics at Cambridge and received a master’s degree in 1960.
His first job was at confectionery brand Rowntree’s, where he worked to develop After Eight mints.
Later, he worked as a journalist and wrote articles. Finance Times And Economistbefore entering politics.
Lord Horam represented three parties in Parliament. He was a Labor and then Social Democratic Party (SDP) MP for Gateshead between 1970 and 1983, switching to the Conservatives in 1987 and serving as a Conservative MP for Orpington from 1992 to 2010.
He was a minister in both Labor and Conservative governments.
Lord Horam was created as a working peer in 2013 as Baron Horam of Grimsargh.
In the House of Lords he advocated increasing housing, increasing the living wage and raising the income tax threshold.
He was a member of the Conservative European Mainstream Group and a staunch supporter of the UK remaining in the EU.
He was also a member of the Conservative Parliamentarians’ Common Sense Group, which campaigned for a crackdown on immigration and opposed what was considered “woke ideology”.
He married former automotive editor Judith Jackson in 1987. Sunday Times And Guard.
He was stepfather to sons Fraser and Lincoln; the latter of whom is currently the Conservative MP for Spelthorne and was elected in 2024.
“John’s widow Judith (nee Jackson) and stepsons Fraser and Lincoln Jopp would like to thank paramedics, police and all staff at St Mary’s for the excellent care John received,” a family statement said.
