Man dies after being bitten by shark off Western Australian coast | Western Australia

A male diver in his 30s died after being bitten by a shark in Western Australia.

The state’s police force confirmed on Saturday afternoon that the 35-year-old man died at the scene after being treated by paramedics for more than two hours.

Police said in a statement that the man was spearfishing with his family on Saturday morning off the coast of Albany and near Michaelmas Island, about 375 kilometers southeast of Perth.

Police said emergency services were called to reports of a possible shark attack and the man was taken to shore in a boat where he was met by paramedics who were unable to resuscitate him.

The state’s primary industries department said the man was bitten by a suspected 15-foot shark just before 11.30am AWST on Saturday.

St John Ambulance said multiple paramedic crews were at the scene on Saturday afternoon. He remained at the scene for treatment of the man.

The department for primary industries has warned people to be extra careful in the Michaelmas Island area and comply with any beach closures advised by local park rangers or surf lifesavers.

The department said it was working with police and other local authorities to coordinate the response to the incident.

Police said they would prepare a report for the coroner.
