Allegedly, a man was hit in the head with a hammer by a woman while he was lying in a hospital bed.
The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at a hospital in Sydney’s inner west.
NSW Police confirmed emergency services were dispatched to a hospital in Camperdown at 12.15pm on Thursday, April 9, following reports of the attack.
Officers were informed that the woman, believed to be known to the victim, had entered the hospital and attacked the 63-year-old man.
The man, who was allegedly hit on the head with a hammer during the attack, was seriously injured and his condition was learned to be critical.
A 46-year-old woman was later arrested and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Investigators are reportedly investigating a possible link between the attack and a recent death in the man’s family, which is said to have triggered a dispute over the will, the Daily Telegraph reported.
A spokesperson for NSW Police said: “A woman will appear in court today following an alleged assault in western Sydney.
“At around 12.15pm (Thursday 9 April 2026), emergency services were called to a hospital in Camperdown following reports of an attack.
“At the scene, police from the Inner West Police Regional Command were told that a woman had allegedly entered the hospital and attacked a 63-year-old man she knew.
“During the incident, it was claimed that the man was hit on the head with a hammer and seriously injured. It was stated that the man’s condition was critical.
“A 46-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station where she was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
“He was denied bail and will appear before the 6th Bail Division Court today (Thursday, April 9, 2026).”
A spokesperson for Sydney LHD said: “The safety and well-being of our patients and staff at Sydney Local Health District is our top priority and any form of violence is unacceptable in our hospitals.
“We can confirm that there was an incident overnight at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where a patient was assaulted by a visitor. No other patients or staff were injured in the incident.
“This matter is currently the subject of an ongoing NSW Police investigation. Sydney Local Health District is working with NSW Police to assist with their investigation.
“Sydney Local Health District is also offering support to staff who witnessed this distressing incident.”
