Mark Butler’s National Press Club speech set to reveal reforms to $50b scheme
The Greens have said they will oppose any cuts to the NDIS, accusing the government of balancing the budget at the expense of disabled people.
Jordan Steele-John, the minor party’s disability spokesperson, said disabled people were disgusted by the NDIS overhaul that had flagged them and felt betrayed by the Labor government, which they thought would protect disability services.
“Disabled people and our families are tired of being used as political footballs,” the senator told the ABC’s Radio National today.
“We’re now in a situation where the state government says we cost too much, the federal government says we cost too much, and in the middle, people with disabilities and our families will receive fewer services and supports. We’ll be left without the support we need to live.”
Steele-John said budget savings could be made elsewhere, such as introducing a windfall tax on gas exports, reducing defense spending or properly funding the quality and safety commission to combat fraud in the scheme.
