Mekedatu dam row: TVK mortgaged Tamil Nadu rights by offering RS seat to Congress, says BJP

BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said that Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is deliberately and systematically inflaming the Mekedatu issue to cover up internal factional fights within the Congress party and creating unnecessary tensions between the two states.
“Despite knowing this, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has not condemned the Karnataka Congress government till date. This is a huge betrayal committed against Tamil Nadu,” he added.

The BJP leader said that instead of severing ties with the Congress party, which had announced to build a dam in Mekedatu that would impact Tamil Nadu, TVK’s handing over of the Rajya Sabha seat to the grand old party clearly reveals the obsession of Vijay, who is desperate to cling to power with the support of the Congress.
“It is extremely shameful to pledge the rights of Tamils and the sentiments of Tamils to the Congress party,” Thirupathy said in a post on ‘X’.
On May 26, Shivakumar welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the review petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government regarding the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river. He said the province is currently in the process of submitting a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
Shivakumar was sworn in as the chief minister of Karnataka on June 3.
Mekedatu is a multi-purpose (drinking water and electricity) project proposed by Karnataka that involves building a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district (now renamed as Bengaluru South district).
Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the project has increased concerns that the state will be affected if the project takes shape.
Once completed, the project aims to provide drinking water to Bengaluru and neighboring areas (4.75 tmcft); According to officials, it will also be able to produce 400 MW of electricity.
