“There is plenty of warm sunshine on Friday, but some rain in the far north-west,” said the Met Office’s forecast for the weekend on Thursday (July 23). “Coolness sets in over the weekend with rain moving south-east across the UK. Windy at times.”

There are no weather warnings in place, but barbecue plans may need to change as flooding hits millions.

Forecasts confirm that eight regions are expected to see heavy rainfall this weekend. These are: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, North West England, South West England, North East England, Yorkshire and the Humber, Midlands, East Anglia and Central England.

While there are no heavy showers in London and the southeast, intermittent showers are expected to be effective in the capital and surrounding districts.

Rain will begin moving south-east from Northern Ireland and Scotland at 7am on Saturday. There will be light rain in the northernmost parts of England until 10am. In the early afternoon, the north west and north Wales will start to feel damp, as will Yorkshire in the afternoon.

England and Wales will be largely dry on Saturday night, but Northern Ireland and Scotland will see rain with a new band of rain. This group will move quickly in the early hours of Sunday.

Moving from Scotland, large parts of Wales, northwest England, Yorkshire and the Midlands will wake up to rain at 7am on Sunday. The same areas will still be wet with rain arriving in the southwest at 10am.

The rain will be at its heaviest around 13:00 on Sunday, when most of the country will be covered with clouds.

Most showers will stop by 10pm, but when the heaviest showers hit England this weekend, 16-32mm of rain is forecast to hit East Yorkshire near Hull.

Temperatures will remain relatively cool throughout the season, reaching 23C on Saturday and 20C on Sunday.
