Mets broadcaster needles team after batter fails to break bat over his knee in frustration

The New York Mets are in this position right now. New York is 11-22, 12.5 games behind the National League East leader Atlanta Braves, and has lost six of its last eight games after falling to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

Mets broadcaster Todd Zeile was acutely aware of how bad things were Friday night after catcher Francisco Alvarez struck out in the top of the fourth inning.
Alvarez whiffed on Angels pitcher Walbert Ureña’s sinker. Alvarez tried to break his bat above his knee but couldn’t even do that.
“You see him trying to break it over his knee,” Zeile said on air. “This isn’t going to feel good. I can’t even break the stick properly right now. God.”

New York managed to come back from a 3-0 deficit on Friday to win the match. However, the team lost by the same score in overtime on Saturday night.
The Mets have one of the best rosters on paper, but cold at-bats in April and early May dropped the team further and further down the National League. He doesn’t appear to have an answer for New York’s offensive woes, but he has made it clear that he stands by the team despite loud calls for him to fire coach Carlos Mendoza.
“We know our record isn’t what we wanted and we know we’re capable of doing better,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said. he told MLB.com. “We don’t see this as a management issue and we don’t plan on making any changes.”
