Former First Lady Michelle Obama said Americans are “not ready” to elect a woman to the White House, citing former Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss of the 2024 presidential election to President Donald Trump.
Obama made the comments to a group of women while promoting his new book, “The Look,” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
“Unfortunately, as we saw in the past elections, we are not ready,” he said on Friday.

“So don’t even look at me about running, because y’all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You’re not,” he continued.
The former First Lady said she believes men in America are unhappy with a woman leading them.
“You know, we have a lot of growing to do, and unfortunately there are still a lot of men who don’t think they can be led by a woman, and we’ve seen that,” Obama said.

In her book published on November 4, Obama talks about her fashion, hair and beauty journey, as well as the time she spent in the White House as the first black woman to serve as First Lady. She wrote that women in politics are often judged on their physical appearance rather than their leadership abilities.
“During our family’s time in the White House, my appearance was under constant scrutiny—what I wore, how my hair was done. I’ve been wanting to take more ownership of this story for a while, sharing it in my own way. I’m grateful to be at a stage in my life where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely; I wear what I love and do what feels right to me. And I’m excited to share some of what I’ve learned along the way,” Obama wrote on Facebook. While promoting her book ahead of its release in June.

“‘The look’ is more than fashion. It’s about confidence. It’s about identity. It’s about the power of authenticity. My hope is that this book sparks discussion and reflection about the way we see ourselves and the way our society defines beauty,” she added.
