A group of Mississippi middle school students prevented a potential crash this week by taking action to stop a school bus after the driver lost consciousness on the highway.

About 40 students from Hancock Middle School were on board when their driver, Leah Taylor, 46, suffered an asthma attack shortly after leaving campus, according to The Associated Press.

Taylor tried to get her medicine but fainted before she could reach it.

Students took action without hesitation to avoid being hit by the bus.

Jackson Casnave, a 12-year-old sixth-grader sitting behind the driver, noticed the bus starting to swerve. He rushed forward to grab the steering wheel and called for help.

“I didn’t have time to process my emotions,” Casnave said. “I wanted to make sure no one got hurt.”

Darrius Clark, who was also 12 years old, then hit the brakes and the students directed the bus to the median and stopped it.

Clark’s 13-year-old sister, Kayleigh, called 911 and later said she had trouble hearing the operator because of her classmates’ screams.

“I was scared, but I also had to help,” Kayleigh said.

Eighth-grader Destiny Cornelius, 15, saw the driver holding a nebulizer and helped administer the medication, while McKenzy Finch, 13, also assisted.

Taylor, who has since made a full recovery, praised the students for their actions.

“I am grateful to my students,” Taylor said. “They saved my life and everyone else is on that bus.”

The students were honored at a school pep rally on Friday and are set to receive a celebratory meal next week, the AP reported.
