Mystery over missing monk last seen on Orkney monastery

Police searches for a missing monk from an island monastery in Orkney will continue next week after his church said he was presumed dead.
Justin Evans, known as Brother Ignatius, a New Zealander and member of the Redemptorist Community, was last seen at Golgotha Monastery in Papa Stronsay just before midnight on Saturday, April 11.
The Diocese of Aberdeen expressed deep sorrow over the “disappearance and possible death” of the young monk.
Police Scotland confirmed on Thursday that efforts to find him will continue on Papa Stronsay and neighboring islands in the coming days. She was last seen wearing a white dress.
Inspector David Hall said: “Our thoughts are with Justin’s family at this very difficult time.
“Extensive and detailed searches were carried out on Papa Stronsay and the islands of Stronsay, including the coastlines, using local police resources and partner organisations.
“Coastal areas on other nearby islands will continue to be searched by local and specialist police resources and partners.
“Any relevant information reported to police about Justin and the circumstances leading to his disappearance will be taken into account.
“There is nothing at this time that would suggest any suspicious circumstances or criminality.”
Previously the Diocese of Aberdeen said Brother Ignatius was “known for his humility and helpfulness”.
A spokesman said: “The Diocese has learned with deep sadness of the disappearance and possible death of 24-year-old Justin Evans, also known as Brother Ignatius, a member of the Redemptorist Community on the island of Papa Stronsay.
“It is believed to have been damaged by sea conditions.”
