All schools up to Standard 8 in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district will remain closed until Thursday (January 15) due to a severe cold wave, district officials said on Sunday. According to the order issued by Basic Education Officer Rahul Pawar, the decision was taken as per the instructions of the district magistrate, news agency PTI reported. The move comes at a time when dense fog and extremely cold conditions continue to affect northern India.

The new regulation applies to all schools from Kindergarten to Standard 8 affiliated to the Central Bureau of Secondary Education (CBSE), ICSE and any education board operating in the district, including the Uttar Pradesh state board. In the directive dated January 9, it was stated that all institutions should follow the instructions meticulously. The Chief Education Officer warned that action would be taken as per the rules against schools found violating the government order. Previously, classes were suspended until January 10 due to cold weather.

Noida continues to suffer from high levels of pollution as well as cold and fog; The air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 286, which falls into the ‘poor’ category. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave conditions are expected to continue till January 13 and temperatures are expected to drop to 6 degrees Celsius. The weather office also predicted heavy fog for January 16 and 17; This means students and parents can expect further extensions of school closures.
