As the cost of everything from groceries to gas steadily increases, we’re all looking for ways to cut costs at the cash register. A nutritionist who now frequently shares practical advice on budget-friendly shopping and cooking has offered eight handy tips for cutting expenses. Molly Cunningham, who has 438,000 followers on Instagram, revealed how she cuts costs when buying food for herself and partner Liam: reports the mirror.
She wrote in the post description: “I usually do my main food shop at Aldi or Tesco and these are a few random things I do that help keep the cost down! It’s just me and Liam needing to be fed but Liam is a 6ft tall plumber with a big appetite and I’m not one for small portions so keeping us both full but still trying to save money can be a challenge and these really helped!!”

1. Make the most of special offers
Molly’s first suggestion was to stock up on items you regularly buy when they become available at discounted prices. He shared an image of a shelf label in Tesco showing the Clubcard offer, drawing attention to a string of six numbers in the bottom left corner. He explained: “The figures represent the year, month and day the Clubcard offer expires.” She also shared a picture of a shelf label at Aldi with the letter D circled in the top right corner, adding: “Similarly at Aldi, the ‘D’ means the product will be discontinued!!”
2. ‘Super six challenge’
Aldi’s ‘super six’ promotion features six different fruits or vegetables at significantly discounted prices, with items rotated every fortnight. Molly explained: “I always do my ‘super six’ challenge. The super six challenge means I get what’s on offer; it’s seasonal, fresher and a great way to get fruit and veg that I might not usually have!”
3. Buy frozen food
Stocking up on frozen foods is always beneficial and can be an effective method of reducing costs. Molly noted: “Farm foods have a huge variety of frozen fruits and vegetables!
“Mostly less than £1 and all pre-chopped… which makes it so much easier to use so you can add more veg to meals!! They even have frozen dragon fruit! They literally have everything from frozen sliced onions to frozen watermelon!!”
4. Look up and down
Molly’s next tip requires a thorough scanning of the supermarket shelves. “I would try looking up and down first,” he advised. “More expensive items are usually at eye level, while cheaper options are often found on the upper or lower shelves, so they’re worth a look!”
5. Focus on legumes
Legumes; It includes products such as lentils, chickpeas and a wide variety of beans such as kidney beans, black beans and broad beans. Molly said: “If you’re not new here, you know I’m using canned legumes for meals a lot! They’re cheap, filling, and provide an easy protein and fiber boost!”
6. Buy spices from world food aisles
Spices are a simple way to enhance any meal. And Molly has a special tip for buying them. “I buy my spices from the world food aisle,” he said. “They’re cheaper, they last longer, and I think they taste so much better!!”
7. Naughty vegetable
Many supermarkets stock ‘crippled vegetables’ (produce that are oddly shaped or generally unusual looking, but are otherwise perfectly safe to eat) at lower prices than their standard equivalents. Molly said: “I always get the wonky veg! I love the wonky veg!! It’s just as nutritious as the regular veg but you get more for your money and it also helps reduce food waste!”
8. Become a vegetarian
Even if you don’t stick to a vegetarian or vegan diet, skipping meat occasionally can provide numerous benefits. Quality meat can be expensive, but not consuming meat also has health benefits. Molly said: “I try to make at least one veggie dish a week! Meat is quite expensive so I like to have a veggie dish once a week.”
She wrote in the video’s description: “I think the Clubcard hack is huge trying to stock up on some branded items there! I also love Farmfoods, the variety of veg they have there is CRAZY and so much easier to use when frozen and available!!
“I really hope this can help!!!!” We like to eat lots of veg and protein but we also try to keep our meals to around £30 a week so I’m really hoping these can help!!
