Olympics: North of England bid for games in 2040s being assessed

The government commissioned UK Sport to carry out an “initial strategic assessment” of a potential bid for the north of England to host the Olympics and Paralympics in the 2040s.

He said the funding body would examine whether the UK could host the Games for the first time since London 2012, along with the potential cost, socio-economic benefit and chances of success of any bid.

“For too long we have been told that the Olympics are too big and too important to be held in the north,” Culture Minister Lisa Nandy told BBC Sport.

“Not anymore. It’s time for the Olympics to go north and show the world what we have to offer.

“We know we can deliver not only the bidding but also the Olympics in the most incredible way. That’s why we’re starting this with a phase one study of the investment, resources, infrastructure and transportation we’ll need.”

The findings of UK Sport’s study will determine whether to proceed with a more detailed “technical feasibility study” and the final decision on any bid will rest with the British Olympic Association (BOA).
