Trump’s Nvidia Deal Undermines National Security

This week, Donald Trump announced that he would allow Nvidia to sell its powerful H200 chips to China. Times Opinion editor Kathleen Kingsbury argues that this move harms national security.

A lot happened this week. Paramount has announced a hostile takeover bid for Warner Brothers Discovery. Australia has now become the first country to ban social media for children. A federal judge has ordered an end to the deployment of California National Guard troops. Here’s something you shouldn’t miss. On Monday, President Trump said the United States would allow Nvidia to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China. There is an irony here because Trump is talking about how important it is for the United States to remain dominant on defense and that AI America is the country that started the AI race. We are the world’s number one superpower and far ahead of China in artificial intelligence. I must say that we will not allow any foreign state to defeat us. Chips like these are increasingly powering our daily lives, but our nation’s military might especially depends on them, fueling AI innovation. So selling cutting-edge chips to our biggest competitor might not be the best idea, especially one that’s notorious for stealing intellectual property. None of this seems to matter to President Trump, who is proud of the 25 percent cut the United States will receive from the deal; This may be illegal, by the way, since the Constitution says exports cannot be taxed. Then again, when did the Constitution stop Trump? Very rarely. The president has repeatedly shown that he is willing to trade almost any American asset or principle for the right price. Just this year, it agreed to sell America’s most advanced fighter jet to Saudi Arabia despite Pentagon concerns that doing so could lead to China stealing the plane’s technology. I think they should go to the top. He accepted a luxury jet as a gift from Qatar. I’m never one to turn down such an offer. Apparently I wasn’t thinking about wires or listening devices that might be connected. And Trump launched his gold card. It’s sort of like a green card, but it has big advantages over the green card, which allows wealthy foreigners to buy US residency for a million. And let’s not forget the $15,000 non-refundable application fee. The Trump administration says applicants will be reviewed. However, a similar program in the UK was closed due to concerns about corruption and criminal behaviour. All of these agreements endanger our nation’s security and our values. And President Trump has plenty of time left to go further. We have three years and two months ahead of us. And what is this in the time of Trump? We have a glimpse of infinity. We have a long time. Now is the time for Congress to step forward and exercise the powers given to it by the Constitution. President Trump should not be allowed to put a price tag on our national security.
