Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally virtually in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Saturday (December 20) after he was unable to reach the venue due to heavy fog in the region. The helicopter had to return to Kolkata airport as it could not land at Taherpur helipad due to poor visibility. During the virtual address, PM Modi apologized to the participants for not being able to speak in person and launched an attack on the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on a number of issues.

At the rally, PM Modi accused the TMC, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of protecting illegal immigrants; This is set to be a major issue ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. He said the TMC was supporting infiltrators and that was the reason why Banerjee’s party opposed the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which the Election Commission of India (ECI) said was aimed at improving the accuracy of voter rolls by removing ineligible voters. He appealed to the people to give his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) an opportunity to lead the government in the eastern state.

Prime Minister Modi said in his speech: “Let the Trinamool oppose me and the BJP all it wants, but the progress of Bengal should not be stopped.” He accused the ruling party of indulging in corruption, nepotism and appeasement politics, adding that this was hindering the development of the state. Prime Minister Modi had reached Kolkata for the Taherpur rally in Nadia on Saturday morning.
