Police Commissioner to retire for more cancer treatment
Updated ,first published
Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski will end his forty-five-year career on Wednesday.
Carroll’s reform plans, who stepped into this position in April 2024 following the surprise resignation of Katarina Carroll, were thwarted when she was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
Gollschewski had to go on extended leave in February 2025.
Gollschewski, who returned to work in September, declared himself cancer-free, but a police spokesman said Gollschewski would retire to receive further treatment.
The spokesman said the 66-year-old man would address the media on Wednesday.
Gollschewski became a familiar face to Queenslanders during daily COVID-19 briefings early in the pandemic.
He managed the security operation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and also served as Queensland Disaster Coordinator during several floods and cyclones.
