Police issue major update on man charged with murder and rape after toddler, 2, dies | UK | News

Police have confirmed the residence status of a man accused of murder and rape following the death of a two-year-old child in Surrey. Surrey Police are also looking to dispel misinformation circulating online claiming the incidents occurred in asylum seeker HMOs (Multi-Occupational Homes). This is wrong.
The two-year-old girl was tragically found dead at an address on Pyrcroft Road in Chertsey on Thursday, June 25. Kevin Kerjean, a 31-year-old French citizen born in the Central African Republic, was later charged with murder, rape of a child under the age of 13 and sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 and was detained.
Following an investigation into the incident, the Home Office confirmed that Kerjean entered the UK legally and applied for European Union Settled Status in December 2020. He was granted permission to remain in the UK in March 2021 and was granted an extension allowing him to remain until March 2031.
Kerjean appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on June 27 and was remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Guildford Crown Court on Monday, June 29.
The investigation by the Major Crime Team is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death after police were called to the property at around 5.40pm on Thursday, June 25, following reports of concerns for safety.
Authorities said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Detective Superintendent Jon Groenen said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family and everyone who knew him.
“Our teams are working hard to get a picture of what happened and there will remain a significant police presence on Pyrcroft Road for the coming days.
“We appreciate that the incident itself, as well as a significant police presence, will be concerning for residents and we would like to thank them for their co-operation in carrying out our investigation.”
