President Trump steals part of spotlight as Spain celebrates World Cup title over Argentina

Sunday’s World Cup final brought a tense, low-scoring finish to a memorable tournament in the United States.

Spain won the World Cup by beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time, but President Donald Trump was in the spotlight after attending the trophy ceremony.

Trump appeared on stage with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and drew cheers and boos as he greeted the Spanish players before the trophy presentation.

Trump briefly appeared in the Spain team photo as the players lifted the trophy before Infantino stepped in and suggested he step aside. Trump also appeared at Chelsea’s Club World Cup trophy celebration after the final in New Jersey earlier this year.

Trump has become a familiar sight at many of the nation’s biggest sporting events during his second term. As Fox News’ Ryan Gaydos previously reported, Infantino welcomed Trump’s attendance at the trophy ceremony following the conclusion of the tournament in the United States.

The FOX broadcast found Trump before the game with Taylor Swift focusing on Chiefs games.

Sitting next to Trump’s luxury suite were King Felipe VI of Spain, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Spain claimed their second men’s World Cup title and prevented Argentina from securing a fourth place finish, which would put Italy’s second-most all-time behind Brazil’s five. It was also possible that Lionel Messi would make his final World Cup appearance. Accordingly, Spain conceded just one goal throughout the tournament.

What most viewers enjoyed about this American-made tournament was the rise in stardom of many of the sport’s biggest stars. Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham and Lionel Messi dominated the headlines throughout the tournament.
