Raheem Sterling arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after motorway crash

Raheem Sterling was arrested on suspicion of drug use after he allegedly crashed his car into a highway barrier.

The former England winger, who last played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is suspected of crashing his Lamborghini into barriers on the M3 motorway in Hampshire on Thursday morning.

The 31-year-old was released on bail pending further investigation.

In a statement, Hampshire Police said: “Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini had collided with barriers on the M3 southbound near Minley Junction.

“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“The 31-year-old driver, from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, possession of class C drugs and failing to provide a sample. He has been released on bail while our investigations continue.”

A source close to Sterling confirmed the arrest but told BBC Sport there was “no evidence” of drugs in his system.

The source added that the actor faced “an extremely difficult few years” that left him “feeling worthless” and “forgotten”.

After leaving Chelsea in January, Sterling joined Feyenoord in February on a deal until the end of the season, but made just eight appearances for the Netherlands.

He left the Blues by mutual consent after agreeing a deal package worth in excess of £300,000 per week for the final 18 months of his contract with the Stamford Bridge club.

During his four years at Chelsea – including a season on loan at Arsenal – he made just 59 league appearances after joining from Manchester City in 2022.

He won four Premier League titles with City and started his career at Liverpool before moving to Manchester in 2015.

Sterling has 82 England caps, the last of which was won at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
