Royals implode with 3 errors as Mets’ Carson Benge scores Little League home run to open game vs KC

The Kansas City Royals turned an ordinary ground ball into a royal disaster against the New York Mets on Tuesday night, producing one of the strangest scoring scenes of the MLB season.
Even the struggling Mets had to be thinking, “We’ll take it.”
With runners on first and second, Mets outfielder Carson Benge hit a slow chopper to the mound and a few seconds later was running at home plate after the Royals committed three errors on the same play, giving New York an early three-run lead.

Royals pitcher Seth Lugo fielded the ball, but his off-balance throw allowed Benge to reach safely for first baseman Jac Caglianone’s first error of the game.

Caglianone took the ball and tried to throw Benge out as he ran to third, but his throw went past the sack and into foul territory.

As Benge completed the third inning and headed home, third baseman Nick Loftin’s flag throw also missed, allowing him to complete his journey between the bases.
Kansas City committed three errors in one game and scored three unearned runs by the Mets before recording their third of the inning.

Instead of allowing the Mets to take an early lead, the Royals nearly gave them error after error.
The Mets happily accepted the gift and took a 3-0 lead before Kansas City even got to first.

You can recover from one mistake. Even two. Most teams lose with this type of series. However, in the fifth, the Royals went on the offensive and tied the game at 9-9.
The Mets will go to the Mets.
