S.F. Supervisor Jackie Fielder reportedly plans to resign amid ‘acute personal health crisis’
Jackie Fielder, one of the most progressive members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, is hospitalized and reportedly plans to resign after more than 14 months in elected office.
Fielder did not immediately respond to the Chronicle’s requests for comment, but Mission Local Fielder reportedly told the news outlet in a brief phone call Friday that he was not well and planned to quit. Fielder has served as city manager for District 9, which includes Mission, Bernal Heights and Portola, since January 2025.
“Jackie Fielder is currently experiencing a serious personal health crisis and we are not at liberty to share details, but we appreciate the support people have given us and are proud of her for taking care of herself,” one of Fielder’s aides told the Chronicle on Friday.

It’s unclear exactly why Fielder was hospitalized. He had not submitted his resignation as of late Friday afternoon, according to city officials.
If Fielder follows through on his reported intention to resign, he would become the second San Francisco manager to do so in less than six months. In November, former Supervisor Beya Alcaraz resigned just a week after being appointed by Mayor Daniel Lurie.
Fielder’s possible departure is likely to have a major impact on the political direction of the board, which has shifted in a more moderate direction in the 2024 elections. The moderate Lurie, whom Fielder has criticized from time to time, will be responsible for his appointment instead.
“I send Supervisor Fielder my best wishes for a speedy recovery,” Lurie said in a statement. he said. “He is a dedicated advocate for his community. I encourage everyone to give him the time and space to get better so he can do this job fully, and I wish him the best in strength and health.”
Fielder’s personal crisis came after a period of absences from City Hall and some staff turnover in his office. In a memo dated March 17, he told the board clerk that he would miss the auditors’ meeting that day and on March 24; He did not specify the reason for his absence. One of his deputies also recently left for personal reasons, the former employee previously told the Chronicle.
Fielder represented a staunchly progressive perspective on the board; often voted against the moderate majority and resisted key parts of Lurie’s legislative agenda; this includes a plan to rezone the city’s west and north sides to allow for more residential development. In February, Fielder announced he would introduce a ballot measure that would fund a public bank by taxing corporations. Fielder also recently called for an audit of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office amid “troubling incidents.”
Fielder’s colleagues expressed concern for him on Friday but did not elaborate on why he was in the hospital.
“It breaks my heart,” Supervisor Myrna Melgar said in a text message.
Supervisor Matt Dorsey said his message to Fielder was “take as much time as you need, we’re all working for you.”
“What is paramount to me is the well-being of a colleague who is a good person and a dedicated public servant,” Dorsey said.
Supervisor Alan Wong said they hope all supervisors “can take the time he needs to rest and recover.”
Former Supervisor Aaron Peskin, a longtime progressive member of the board, also said he hoped Fielder “gets whatever help he needs.” He did not have any information about her condition, but expressed sympathy for her situation in light of her well-publicized struggle with alcohol use, which led to her entering recovery in 2021.
“I say this as someone who has been through difficult times,” Peskin said. “This is a time to put political differences aside and for people to care for each other. This is a time to let people get the healing they need.”
