Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said he was being sarcastic when he called reports of Iranian ships breaching the U.S. blockade “Awesome.” In a post I wrote to X on Monday, In response to news that as many as 26 ships had evaded U.S. detection.

Murphy ignored criticism that he was celebrating the shortcomings of President Donald Trump’s military strategy.

“This is incredibly disingenuous. Frankly, all these Republicans know I’m being cynical. They just don’t want to have to answer for the fact that this war has gone off the rails,” Murphy said. “Republicans don’t want to talk about it, so they’re trying to cynically create fake outrage.”

Murphy’s defense of those statements underscores the tension Democrats have been under since the United States first began hostilities with Tehran: pushing back on parts of the Trump administration’s Iran strategy without mistakenly being sympathetic to a geopolitical foe.

Like many Democrats, Murphy opposed Trump’s decision to bomb Iran and has recently voiced criticism of Iran’s plans to impose a naval blockade of Iran to undermine its control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil transportation.

“Let’s talk about Trump’s crazy plan to fix Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz: Help them close the Strait.” Murphy said announcement of the administration’s strategy earlier this month.

“It compounds one mistake after another.”

GOP skeptics who responded to his post believe Murphy was celebrating the defeat of a strategy he initially thought was ill-advised.
