Several flood warnings and alerts for rain across the UK

Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts have been issued across England next week following days of continuous rain.

As of Sunday afternoon, 89 flood warnings were issued in England and 223 flood warnings were issued.

Most were released in the south-west and Midlands, according to the Environment Agency. There are four flood warnings in Scotland.

The Environment Agency predicts groundwater flooding is likely in Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and West Sussex, and on rivers across Somerset, over the next five days.

The agency said localized river flooding was likely on the River Severn over the next five days and on the Rivers Trent and Soar by Tuesday.

Properties are likely to be flooded and travel service delays are expected.

Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning from 12.00 to 23.59 on Monday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain from 12 noon to 23.59 on Monday. The warning covers London and parts of South East England, South West England and Wales.

Heavy rain on Monday afternoon and evening may cause flooding and travel disruptions. The Met Office has warned to expect some disruption to power supplies and other services.

Forecasters said: “Bands of rain and heavy showers will move eastwards across southern parts of England and Wales on Monday afternoon and evening. 10-15mm of rain will be quite common, with some places experiencing 20-30mm of rain exposed to strong southerly and south-easterly winds.”

Additionally, localized inland flooding is forecast for the south and west of England on Monday and possibly Tuesday. The Environment Agency said wider localized inland flooding was possible from today (Sunday) until Wednesday.

So far, it has rained every day of 2026, that is, 36 consecutive days. South-west England and South Wales saw 50 percent more rainfall than normal, the Met Office said on Thursday.

Three storms hit the UK in January, causing floods and disruption to travel.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: “Rain has been reported somewhere in the network on every day of the year so far. The UK has had a wet start to the year, particularly in Northern Ireland and Southern England, although on some days amounts have been negligible and some areas have seen dry days.”

“This is largely due to a series of fronts or low pressure systems coming in from the west, bringing heavy rain at times and some damaging winds. There is little sign of a decline in the current forecast as the weather becomes more unstable over the coming days and weekend.”
