Sharon Stone says ‘Euphoria’ should be shown in ‘every high school’

Sharon Stone says HBO’s controversial series “Euphoria” should be shown in high schools across America and that parents “need to see it.”

The 68-year-old actor, who joined the cast of the TV series “Euphoria” for its recently completed third and final season, praised the series, which has come under criticism for its graphic depictions of sex, drug use and violence, in an interview with Keke Palmer for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series.

“I think this is the best show on television,” the “Basic Instinct” star said.

“Euphoria,” which premiered in 2019, followed a group of high school students facing the challenges of adolescence, but in the third season, the story jumped ahead a few years and followed them as young adults.

Stone noted that the “Euphoria” audience watches the characters grow and face the increasingly serious consequences of their actions. He explained that he related to the portrayals of addiction and drug culture in the series because of his own family experience.

“We met these kids,” Stone said. “We’ve seen them turn into young adults. We’ve seen them turn into full-blown drug dealers. That’s what I experienced in my family, too.”

Stone recalled that his brother, Michael Stone, was involved in drug dealing, which led to his incarceration at Attica Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in New York.

The Oscar nominee shared that she cried after watching the first episode of “Euphoria” and believes it is an honest reflection of the real issues facing high school students.

“‘Euphoria’ is very relevant,” he said. “I believe this should be shown in every high school and I think all parents should see this. As a mother, I love this.”

“What I like most is that it gives you the opportunity to chat,” Palmer, 32, said. “I think sometimes people just scratch the surface of the idea of, ‘No, this is too much sex. This is too much sex, too much sex.’ That’s the important thing.”

Stone, a mother of three children, said the series sheds light on issues that many parents do not want to acknowledge.

“‘My kid wouldn’t do that.’ Really? Do you know? So, does your child tell you who is next to him? he asked. “Because what matters is who is with you.”

Although Stone maintains that “Euphoria” should be viewed by students and parents alike, series creator Sam Levinson and the stars have repeatedly warned that the TV-MA-rated series should not be viewed by younger viewers due to suggestive themes and graphic content.

When the first season aired in 2019, Levinson, 41, and Zendaya, 29, who plays Rue Bennett, argued over whether the show was intended to be watched by young teens.

“I hope it creates a certain dialogue between parents and their children,” Levinson said. IndieWire. “I don’t think this is a program for people under 17, but…”

“But if your parent wants to talk about it, that’s a good thing,” Zendaya added.

“Or if you’re going to watch it anyway and you think your child will watch it, too, then it might be good to have a conversation with them,” Levinson said.

During an interview in 2019 Guard, Zendaya also addressed concerns about younger viewers watching the show.

“I think the important thing to recognize is that the show is about teenagers and it’s not necessarily for teenagers, I think people can misinterpret that,” he said.

“It is very important to us that only young people aged 18 and over watch this and if you are younger, be guided by your parents,” Zendaya said. he added. “This is important for all of us because this show is hard to watch sometimes.”

However, Zendaya told the news outlet that the content depicted in “Euphoria” wasn’t “really” shocking to her.

“”I think it’s shocking if it’s not just your experience,” he said. “Just because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen every day, all the time. Only certain people can understand this a little better than others. Someone will connect to it, and the person who needs to see it will see it.”

Ahead of the second season premiere, Zendaya, who won two Emmy Awards for her role as Rue, reiterated on social media that “Euphoria” is for “mature audiences.”

“This season, perhaps even more so than last season, deals with topics that can be extremely emotional and triggering and difficult to watch,” he told fans in an Instagram post.

“Please only watch if you feel comfortable,” he said. “Take care and know that either way you are still loved and I can still feel your support.”
