Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday, February 9, 2026, directed the police to “strike decisively against terrorism” in the Union Territory (UT). Meanwhile, J&K remained peaceful on the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
Speaking at the inauguration of the J&K Police Martyrs’ Memorial Hockey Tournament in Jammu, Mr. Sinha said, “J&K Police’s unwavering determination and message to the nation is that adversity will not break our spirit. We will overcome every obstacle to achieve new milestones as we move forward.”
Instructing the police to “attack terrorism decisively”, Sinha said: “Cooperate with every individual in the society to completely eliminate the terrorist network.”
Praising the J&K Police, Mr. Sinha said that the brave personnel who sacrificed their present for the future of the country wore uniform as a duty towards everyone and prioritized national honor over life. “They should live on in our memories,” he added.
The district governor also called on all segments of society to stand up against drugs. “We reaffirm our promise for a drug-free J&K and the J&K Police Martyrs Memorial Hockey Tournament,” Mr. Sinha said.
Meanwhile, Afzal Guru’s death anniversary passed peacefully in Kashmir. Unlike in the past, no closure calls were made by the separatists. Vehicle traffic was normal and all offices and schools remained open. Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013, for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack, and the execution triggered prolonged street protests in Kashmir.
