‘Strong’ 4.9 earthquake, aftershocks rock Coachella Valley
A series of earthquakes, including one considered significant, shook homes and properties in the Coachella Valley on Monday.
The strongest earthquake ever recorded, with a magnitude of 4.9, occurred on January 19, Martin Luther King Jr. It occurred around 5:56 p.m. Monday and was centered roughly 18 miles north of Indio, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake was felt throughout the Southland, including San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

‘Powerful, scary, loud’
While some local residents described the 4.9 magnitude earthquake as “strong” and “powerful”, university professor and author Ruth Nolan said the earthquake was “strong, scary, loud”.
Others told the Daily Press the tremor lasted about 15 seconds and was described as a “strong shaking” and “rolling” motion that shook the property.

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported 10 miles north-northwest of Indio at 6:50 p.m.

At 18:27, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 19 kilometers north of Indio.

At 17:57, 3.3 and 3.4 magnitude earthquakes occurred approximately 21 kilometers north of Indio.
No damage was reported in Palm Springs, according to Palm Springs Police Department spokesman Gustavo Araiza. Initial reports online did not immediately indicate damage in other cities in the Coachella Valley. Desert Sun reported.

Three earthquakes over the weekend shook Devore and parts of the Northern Mojave Desert.
According to the USGS, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck 5 miles southwest of Devore and near Fontana on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 5:41 p.m.
The earthquake was felt in parts of San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, including local mountain communities.
The earthquake was close to the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault zones.
Earlier the same day, the Johannesburg region was shaken by a 2.9 magnitude earthquake at 8:24 am and a 3.1 magnitude earthquake at 8:21 am.
