Swansea man jailed for life after killing his older brother

A Swansea man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering his brother.

South Wales Police said Darren Steel, 41, of Morriston, was jailed for at least 20 years after being convicted of murder and grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm at his first trial.

The body of Martin Steel, 48, was found in Hill View Crescent, Clase, shortly after 10.30am in May 2023.

Jurors heard at an earlier hearing that the brothers shared a “love-hate” relationship that could become “temporary” when alcohol came into play.

Detective inspector Stuart Prendiville said: “This was a long and complex investigation into an incident that shocked Clase, Morriston and the wider Swansea community. The impact on the family has been significant.”

“Darren Steel committed the ultimate betrayal against his brother and caused further distress by pleading not guilty, putting the family through not one but two trials.”

He said the police thought the life sentence was “entirely justified” and that this was a relief.

“Darren Steel is a violent and dangerous individual and a life sentence and a 20-year minimum tariff is entirely justified in this case.

“We are relieved at the outcome and happy that the court proceedings are now over. Our thoughts are with the family.”
