Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is launching an investigation into two manufacturers of mifepristone who he says profited from the abortion drug despite evidence that it “poses serious risks to women.”
Hawley notified two companies, Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, in letters addressed to the presidents of the companies seized by Fox News Digital. In the letters, he informs company executives that he has launched an investigation through the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, which he chairs.
Hawley wrote to both companies: “Increasing evidence shows that mifepristone poses serious risks to women. Your company has continued to profit from the widespread distribution of this drug even as serious questions have been raised about bleeding, infection, sepsis, and other dangerous complications associated with its use.”
“Congress must determine what your company knew about the harms of mifepristone, when it knew it, what it told regulators, and what it may not have disclosed to women and the public,” he added.

In the letters, companies are requested to share documents related to the investigation by April 24.
These documents include all mifepristone-related adverse event reports, relevant internal databases, and a number of other documents.
Neither company immediately responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
The investigation comes about a week after Hawley introduced a new bill to remove FDA approval of mifepristone.

The new bill builds on a proposal Hawley introduced last year that would ban mifepristone and allow women to sue manufacturers who profit from the drug, which the lawmaker called “inherently dangerous.”
The Protecting Women from Chemical Abortion Act was introduced to the Senate on Tuesday and would ban the use of mifepristone to terminate pregnancies.

“The science is clear: Chemical abortion drugs are inherently dangerous to women and open to abuse. But big companies like Danco Laboratories make billions of dollars off of it,” Hawley said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “That’s why I introduce new ones legislation prohibiting the use It aims to prevent mifepristone from being used for abortion and women to sue its manufacturers. “Congress must act now to protect women’s health and safety.”

If passed, the law will be withdrawn FDA approval for drugs and classifies its distribution for abortion as violations of federal law. According to Guttmacher Institute data, mifepristone was used in 63% of all abortions in the United States in 2023.
The Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit research organization formerly affiliated with Planned Parenthood, also estimates the number of abortions provided by clinicians in 2024 to be 1,038,100. However, this figure only includes states without abortion bans and does not include abortions performed outside the formal healthcare system or in states with different abortion laws.
Hawley expressed concerns about the abortion pill last May when he introduced a separate bill that would direct the FDA to take safeguards on mifepristone and allow women who experience complications the right to sue telehealth providers and pharmacies for damages.
