UW professor: ‘I would not be hired’ today under university’s new DEI rules

A professor from the University of Washington became the head of the university stringent diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) requirements a teacher performance evaluation rubric that includes a scorecard measuring DEI strategy for new hires and used to evaluate potential professor performance.
Stuart Reges, non-tenured faculty professor at the UW Paul G. Allen School of Computing Science and EngineeringHe said that despite his academic achievements at the university, he would not be hired under DEI’s strict commitment conditions.
“To score high on all of these, you have to say you have deep knowledge of DEIs,” Reges told Fox News Digital. “The funny thing is, if I applied today, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t get hired. Even though I won the Distinguished Teaching Award here at the university, there’s no way that’s going to happen.”

The University of Washington’s listing for the role of associate professor in school psychology includes a mandatory “diversity statement” for all applicants, implying a commitment to the university’s “commitment to racial equity.”
“A one-page diversity statement describing your identity, location, experience, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and alignment with APA’s Framework for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” job posting is read. “Also explain your philosophy of teaching and learning, including how your work will advance the College of Education’s commitment to racial equity and social justice.”
Seattle Red radio host Jason Rantz also criticized the university’s hiring policy, writing in his latest column, “This application process makes it easier to discriminate against conservatives, which is exactly why you can’t hear the voices of far-left faculty members.”

“The university does not seek diversity of thought; it imposes a monoculture of approved political views,” Rantz added.
In addition to the required applicant diversity statement, the professor explained that a rubric used to evaluate a potential professor’s performance includes a section labeled “Diversity” that ranks applicants from poor to excellent.

“I know faculty, I know very talented faculty members who left because of those kinds of pressures, and people who didn’t even apply,” Reges explained. “I think a lot of graduate students who want to pursue a career in teaching say: why bother?”

“I mean, look at all the crap you have to deal with,” Reges added. “Basically, when you tell them what you’re going to do, you have to make a statement that will make them happy.”
Publicly funded University of Washington’s determination to ‘challenge’ itself to implement DEI policies calls into question its alignment with the President Donald Trump‘s January executive order titled: “President Donald J. Trump Protects Civil Rights and Merit-Based Opportunities by Ending Illegal DEI.”
“Many companies and universities use DEI as an excuse for biased and illegal employment practices and illegal admissions preferences, ignoring the fact that the core rhetoric and ideas of DEI promote intergroup hostility and authoritarianism,” the order states.

In March, US Department of EducationThe Office for Civil Rights (OCR) launched an investigation into some universities for “racial discriminatory practices in educational programs and activities.”
The University of Washington was also among the universities researched.
“The University of Washington does not view diversity and access as antithetical to merit and excellence, and we are committed to providing access to excellence for all,” a spokesperson for the university told Fox News Digital. “Our hiring practices comply with state and federal laws to ensure that race is not a factor in hiring, and UW acted proactively when known that such a violation had occurred.”
“Schools, colleges and departments within the university have significant latitude in their hiring practices, but all must comply with state and federal laws,” the spokesperson added.
“Faculty of Education research cited in a document local commentator’s latest blog post “This was lawful, but to avoid any ambiguity or misinterpretation, we are rescinding it and providing additional guidance on hiring practices before it is republished,” the spokesperson continued. “We are also reviewing hiring practices more broadly to ensure they comply with state and federal laws.”
