‘You can’t be more Pauline than Pauline’: Penny Wong says Liberals are ‘overrun by fringes’
Penny Wong He says the Liberal party is “overrun by the fringes” and that its approach to environmental policy will lead to higher energy prices.
Speaking to ABC’s Insiders just now, the foreign secretary asked:
What happened to the Liberal Party? I mean, it was a serious mainstream political party in this country, and now it’s been overrun by those on the fringes.
They’re trying to get over the edge Pauline Hansonand what to tell you Susan Ley – And Andrew Hastie And Angus Taylor – You can’t be more Pauline than Pauline. But eventually their confused, fragmented approach will lead to higher prices for Australians.
He said Labor “understands” people’s frustration with energy prices and that bringing more supply into the system would “structurally improve Australians’ position on prices”.

‘We want to do this right’ to reduce out-migration, says Duniam
shadow home secretary, Jonathon DuniamHe said the opposition would pledge to reduce overseas immigration in the coming months, just days after Conservative Liberal MPs suggested the policy as a possible warning shot against Sussan Ley’s leadership.
Some Liberal MPs have warned that tackling the hot button issue on immigration policy is their next priority after the party’s moderates lost the domestic policy fight over net-zero carbon policies by 2050.
Duniam, who expressed support for Ley’s leadership on Sky on Sunday, refused to put a timetable on the policy process.
“We want to get this right, and I want to work very closely with my colleagues and experts in the field, including representatives of immigration stakeholder groups, to make sure we get it right,” he said.
I will not rush into announcing a policy and pull numbers out of the air and processes. We will do this the right way, and we will do it at the time that is right for our party and our country.
Duniam confirmed the policy would reduce arrival numbers, saying it would cover both net overseas migration and Australia’s permanent intake of overseas arrivals.
Storm barrage will continue to affect eastern Australia
The Bureau of Meteorology said severe storms could continue to affect parts of NSW and Queensland on Sunday.
Damaging winds, heavy rain or hail likely, meteorologist says Angus Hines in question.

Severe storms hit south-east Queensland on Saturday, with more than 50mm of rain recorded in 30 minutes in many places west of Brisbane.
According to Energex, almost 3,000 properties were without power in southeast Queensland at 9pm on Saturday.
According to the Higgins Storm Chasing Facebook page, large hail up to 7cm in diameter fell on the small town of Silverspur, about 60km southwest of Stanthorpe.
The group’s social media posts also showed flash flooding in the Scenic Rim region and several downed trees near Coffs Harbor in northern NSW.
The storms are expected to move away from the coast on Sunday.

Conservative Liberal senator Jonathon Duniam says he supports Susan Ley He does not expect a challenge following the net zero decision.
Speaking to Sky News, Duniam downplayed the show of force from the right wing of the Liberal party ahead of last week’s party room meeting of Conservative MPs and leadership candidates. Andrew Hastie And Angus Taylor came as a united group.
“We’re very good friends with Andrew Hastie, we’re also very good friends with Angus Taylor and all the people in that group and people that others would classify as moderates.
“What we need to do at the end of the day is to clean up our policy proposal and have clear, coherent arguments about what we are proposing and why it is better for the Australian people than Labor’s proposal.”
Duniam declined to say whether Hastie or Taylor would be a better leader of the opposition.
“Sussan Ley is our leader,” he said:
I support him because he is the one guiding us through this process.
He is the one who achieved this policy outcome. I look forward to working with him on other issues such as immigration, which falls within the realm of home affairs and immigration policy.
That’s why I support Susan Ley. He is our leader. It will take us to the next election and we will put an end to this and hold this appalling government to account.
