Record labels sign deal to boost musicians’ pay

Music reporter
PA MediaSong writers and session musicians will receive better wage rates under a turning point agreement adopted by the music industry and the government.
For the first time, songwriters will receive travel and food costs when they join a session or song writing camp. Previously, they were expected to cover their wages, and they could only get payment when only a song was published.
Situation Emphasized by raye 2023 Ivor Novello Awards, the record company bosses, songwriters’ free work “expected to work” is expected to “insult” said.
The new agreement also provides a wage increase of up to 40% when they participate in the registration sessions for session musicians.
Pop musicians will see from £ 130 to £ 182 of the standard wage increase. For example, the orchestra musicians will receive a 15% smaller increase – for example, for the main violinist, it will rise from £ 92.96 to 106.90 £.
The changes were announced by Sir Chris Bryant, Minister of Creative Industry Sir Chris Bryant, who said that he was tired of the musicians who were forced to live with money in the amount of pirtry to produce songs “who loves to dance in their kitchen”.
They emerged in 2024 through the Creative Wage Working Group (CRWG) of the government, which was established to help the musicians’ deficiency in the flow age income.
“I can’t transform the world -wide flow state, but what I can do is to make sure we have the best agreement for artists in England,” Sir Chris addresses the insignificant copyrights of many artists from flow services.

The new framework was accepted by three major record companies with the support of the Association of Musicians, Ivors Song Writers, Independent Music Association and the Council of Music Makers.
Furthermore, before 2000, it allows musicians who signed a registration agreement before the emergence of the flow to re -negotiate their contracts and receive higher wage rates.
They will also receive any debt at the record company (A process initiated by Sony Music in 2021) with additional support to get “missing” songs added to flow platforms.
In general, the changes will offer “tens of millions of pounds” to musicians by 2030.
However, the Council of Musicians and Music Producers Council said that the package did not do any more to deal with the “Music Flow economy with basic problems”.
For all artists, a minimum copyright and a change in the copyright law that will allow artists and songwriters to get their rights back after a certain period of time.

Before the flow, they receive payment when a CD or vinyl record is sold to songwriters. Today, each song is stolen in flow services, they receive a part of the copyright of 0.003 £.
The 2024 report of the consulting firm Midia Research argued that only 10% of working songwriters earned more than $ 30,000 (£ 22,000) per year.
More than half earned less than $ 1,000 (£ 741), most of them referred to most “lack of meaningful flow income” as their primary problems.
The reasons were captured by people like Björn Ulvaeus, who said that the industry was “cheating on songwriters” with a “dysfunctional” payment system at best.
‘Small step in a marathon’
“To this point, it has been a very terrible being,” says InES Dunn Who wrote for artists Mimi Webb, Maisie Peters and Holly Humberstone.
“You should pay for your trains to participate even in a session, you should pay for your lunch. So everyone, before they get out of their pocket before they reach the studio.”
He describes new payments as “a small step in a marathon”.
“I think it is important to state that this does not solve problems in the long run.” “This is not the scope of what song writers deserve, but it’s a really vital step to ensure that people can only emerge and do their jobs.
“There are many writers with Uber drivers or only part -time works to survive. There are song writers who cannot meet children’s care – and these [payments] They can help with this, even if they are.
“I just want songwriters to be a day when they can be song writers, and that’s enough.”
Universal Music PublishingPayments help to address the “great power imbalance” in the music industry, Simon Barber, Professor of Writing Lyrics at Birmingham City University and Sodajerker at Song Writing Podcast.
“If you think that songwriters are actually new materials for these big companies, it is a very fundamental requirement that most industries are expected to participate to ask for expenses such as travel and meals.
“That’s why I think it’s a really positive step. And I think he probably encourages songwriters from more diverse pasts because they will not work more to participate more, to participate more.”
The BBC realizes that two of the three major labels agreed to introduce “daily” payments for Warner Music and Universal – writers.
Most importantly, the labels will not be paid by the artist who contains a money session.
The third major Sony Music established a £ 100,000 fund led by the Ivors Academy. The fund will also provide writers “wider support” to writers to help increase access and opportunities in the music industry.
Further changes
Changes, a deputy “Full reset” From the flow market to enable artists to have a “fair share” of the flow market, the UK now produces more than £ 1 billion per year for the music industry.
Sir Chris told BBC that the new frame will be reviewed 12 months later.
“In a year, if we see that this is not really a development in the wages of artists and musicians, we always have the option to make legislature.”
Creative Payment Working Group will continue to force more changes to look at the payment of fees for session musicians in September.
Such musicians playing in the records of artists such as Harry Styles, Adele and Lewis Capaldi receive copyrights when these songs are played on radio and TV.
However, they do not have equivalent royalties for digital flow or optional radio services.
