Overnight road closures mark end of £54m works

A month-long overnight road closure will mark the final part of the multimillion-pound motorway project in front of York railway station.

The final phase of the plan, which is due to start on Monday, includes a new road layout, cycle lanes and pedestrian paths, as well as improved bus stops and new public spaces.

York City Council said work finishing the carriageway pavement around the station will take place during the four-phase closure between 20:00 BST and 06:00 BST from 1 to 26 June, with the roads reopening during the day.

Councilor Kate Ravilious said the final stages completed would see “wonderful open spaces for everyone to enjoy”.

People have been urged to plan ahead for the coming weeks, with travel information being published for all modes of transport to aid access to York city center and the station.

Ravilious, the council’s executive member for transport, said: “We are doing everything we can to minimize disruption, including detailed planning and sharing this information to help people plan ahead.

“As with previous Queen Street closures, we encourage everyone to plan their journeys in advance and help reduce congestion by using public transport and walking and cycling where possible.”

The council emphasized that the station and surrounding businesses will remain open during the work.

A spokesman said buses will continue to operate, but some routes will be changed where free shuttle buses will run between Blossom Street and the train station during night closures.

The regeneration works in front of York Station, which started in 2023 with an initial budget of around £26 million, will result in the completion of the new road layout and walking, cycling and bus infrastructure.

The works were planned to be completed in May last year, but are planned to be completed this summer.

An audit in March found the project had ended £28.5m over budget.
