NDIS Minister faces questions over Mosman Park double murder-suicide

Disability and National Disability Insurance Scheme Minister Mark Butler held a press conference in the east where he was asked to respond to allegations that NDIS funding for two young boys living with autism had recently been cut by the Mosman Park family killed in a double murder and suicide last week.

Teenagers Leon and Otis were killed by their parents in a suspected murder-suicide in Mosman Park on Friday.

The parents are suspected of killing their son and then themselves after leaving a note on their front door to call the police.

Friends and one of the family’s support workers said the family had recently had their NDIS funding cut and were struggling to cope with the children’s high needs.

“It’s just a terrible tragedy, I think everyone in Australia is deeply shocked by what happened,” Butler said.

“I know there have been some comments about the NDIS packages that these children are using in Western Australia.

“I want to be really clear, first of all I don’t want to say anything that would affect the police investigation. “I want to reassure people that the NDIA is co-operating fully with the police as long as they have any useful contribution to the investigation.

“I would also like to make clear that there are very clear legal restrictions on our ability, my ability and the NDIA’s ability to say anything about packages containing children, so I am not in a position to respond to some of the speculation I have seen in the Western Australian media.”
