The great World Cup final ‘rip-off’! Fans poke fun at offering for supporters who paid $1m for top hospitality tickets

An accommodation provider has come under fire for its offer to fans at the World Cup final.

Ahead of the tournament’s showpiece event, ten fans received a $1 million (£743,640) package through On Location, a company that describes itself as ‘the official hospitality partner of the world’s leading sports, music and lifestyle events’.

But when photos of the courtside seats of these ten ticket holders at New York New Jersey Stadium were shared by Sports Business Journal reporter Alex Silverman, many people were quick to react.

One social media user said: ‘All this for sitting on a polyester Amazon sofa…’

Another added: ‘This is the worst thing I’ve read in a while. ‘I hate this Americanized tournament so much.’

One surprised fan further quipped: ‘$1 million? For the worst seats? Who would want to sit there?’

Sitting on sofas and looking at the sun was a hotly debated topic.

Sitting on sofas and looking at the sun was a hotly debated topic.

One additional user added: ‘Why would anyone pay that much?’ Another fan later said: ‘The side views of the pitch are the worst in any football stadium in the world. They’re all royally shafted here.’

By the way, the match started at 15.00 local time and the temperature was around 27 degrees Celsius, the sun was shining.

All supporters were then given special sun hats to cope with the conditions, despite appearing to be sitting on a regular couch and behind a glass barrier, further drawing the ire of social media users.

One said: ‘$1 million and it’s a truly awful sight’, while another said: ‘Glad they threw the hat in there for free considering the price, otherwise it wouldn’t have been worth it.’

A third wrote: ‘And with the photographer standing in front of you the entire game, the view is obstructed.’

Despite the outrage over the quality of the seats, it’s worth noting that the $1 million package also includes other alleged perks for lucky fans.

The whole experience is said to kick off on Saturday, when ticket holders attend the Sports Illustrated party hosted by 50 Cent and Diplo.

He was then transported by helicopter from Manhattan to New York’s New Jersey Stadium, while other VIP tickets to high-profile events and restaurants were thrown in for after the World Cup final.
