The Metropolitan Police confirmed there was an “increased police presence” in Kensington Gardens, one of London’s most popular parks.

The statement, made at 11.38am on April 17, said: “Police presence is increasing in Kensington Gardens and officers are assessing a number of discarded items.

“Some police officers assigned as a precaution wear protective clothing.

“We recognize this may be of concern to local residents and the wider public.

“We do not believe there will be any increased risk to public safety at this stage, but we would urge people to avoid the area while officers carry out their work.”
