Tom Morello faces conservative backlash after NYC anti-ICE performance

Musician Tom Morello faced backlash from conservatives after performing to crowds at New York’s Hands off protest at Federal Plaza in Manhattan on Tuesday.
The guitarist, known for Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, sang Woodie Guthrie’s song “This Land is Your Land” with the following lyrics: “In the city squares, in the shadow of the bell tower, near the charity office, I see my people. Some are falling apart and all are wondering if this land is still built for you and me.”
A cheering crowd carrying signs reading “Hands off New York” and “ICE is illegal” sang along with the 61-year-old.
“My mom and I lived at 142nd and Riverside a long time ago,” Morello told the crowd. Rolling stone. “My brothers, if there is one thing I have learned in all the years since then, it is this: If it looks like fascism, if it looks like fascism, if it dresses like fascism, if it talks like fascism, if it kills like fascism and if it lies like fascism, then, my brothers, it is anathema to fascism.”

He also called the Trump administration an “authoritarian clown show” and called for a “mass movement of peaceful anti-fascist crime fighters.”
A video of Morello singing sent to x It received many negative comments.

It received great support, but on Instagram.
“Thank you Tom Morello and New York! Thank you for your support of immigrants,” one commenter wrote. “One of my favorites, Woody Guthrie, singing. Great lyrics. Keep up the good work. We will finally derail the authoritarian train of Trump and his friends and put the country on a better path toward justice for citizens and immigrants alike.”

Morello also performed at Madison Square Garden on Monday night alongside President Donald Trump critic Bruce Springsteen.
