Iran’s Parliament Security Committee approves plan to impose tolls on Strait of Hormuz

According to IRIB, a member of the National Security Commission announced the official approval of the plan, which details key focus areas for the Bosphorus, including security regulations, ship safety, environmental protection, financial regulations and the implementation of the rial-based toll system.

The plan also explicitly bans the passage of American and Israeli ships, strengthens the sovereign role of Iran and its armed forces, and outlines cooperation with Oman in establishing the legal framework of the Bosphorus. It also prohibits the passage of countries participating in unilateral sanctions against Iran, according to IRIB.
The approved measures come amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition, now in its second month, and reflect Tehran’s efforts to assert control over one of the world’s most critical maritime choke points through which a significant portion of global oil shipments pass.
Earlier in the day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News that the US would regain control of the Strait of Hormuz, which would eventually lead to freedom of navigation.

“The market is well supplied and we are seeing more and more ships transiting each day as individual countries make deals with the Iranian regime. Over time, the US will regain control of the straits and there will be freedom of navigation, whether through US escorts or multinational escorts,” he said.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump threatened to target Iran’s civilian energy infrastructure, including power plants, oil wells and Kharg Island, if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Great progress has been made, but if for some reason an agreement cannot be reached soon, which it likely will, and the Strait of Hormuz is not ‘Open for Business’ immediately, we will end our beautiful ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely destroying all of Iran’s Power Generation Facilities, Oil Wells, and Kharg Island.”
